The A75 Kinmount Straight - Scotland's Most Haunted Road
A stretch of Scottish highway notorious for phantom vehicles, animal apparitions, and unexplained forces that cause cars to swerve and crash, earning it the title of Britain's most haunted road.
The A75 between Annan and Gretna in southwest Scotland has earned its reputation as one of the most haunted roads in Britain through decades of consistent paranormal reports. The most active stretch is the Kinmount Straight near the village of Kinmount, where motorists have experienced terrifying encounters since at least the 1950s. The road passes through an area rich in Scottish history, including sites of medieval battles, plague burials, and ancient Celtic settlements. The sheer volume and consistency of reports from independent witnesses—including police officers, truck drivers, and ordinary travelers—has made the A75 a serious subject of paranormal investigation rather than mere folklore.
The most commonly reported phenomenon involves phantom vehicles. Drivers encounter what appear to be solid cars, trucks, or horse-drawn carriages traveling toward them on the wrong side of the road, forcing emergency evasive maneuvers—only to watch the vehicles vanish on impact or passage. In 1957, a truck driver reported a careening furniture van heading straight toward him; he swerved violently to avoid collision, but the van disappeared without a trace. Since then, hundreds of similar incidents have been documented. Other witnesses describe being overtaken by vintage cars from the 1930s-40s that accelerate past them and vanish into thin air.
Animal apparitions are equally prevalent. Motorists report seeing large birds flying directly at their windscreens, massive dogs running across the road, and flocks of chickens or geese that scatter under wheels—yet no impact occurs and no bodies are found. Some drivers have experienced invisible forces grabbing their steering wheels, pulling cars toward embankments or oncoming traffic despite their efforts to maintain control. A few witnesses describe seeing screaming faces pressed against their windows from outside while traveling at high speeds. The area’s history of accidents and deaths may have created a feedback loop where tragedy breeds further paranormal activity. Despite modern improvements to the road, the hauntings continue, making the A75 a place where Scottish history’s restless spirits still terrorize modern travelers.
