The Cheltenham Ghost
A ghostly woman in black was repeatedly seen and documented by multiple witnesses.
The Cheltenham Ghost
The Cheltenham Ghost, also known as the Morton Ghost, haunted a house in Cheltenham from 1882 to 1889. The case is notable for the detailed documentation by Rosina Despard, who observed and recorded the apparition over seven years.
The Apparition
Rosina Despard first saw the ghost in 1882: a tall woman in black widow’s weeds, with a handkerchief held to her face. The figure walked the same route through the house, passing through a particular doorway and descending the stairs.
The Documentation
Despard was a medical student who approached the apparition scientifically. She kept detailed notes, tried to photograph and communicate with the ghost, and had other household members observe. Her account was published by the Society for Psychical Research.
The Identity
The ghost was believed to be a former owner of the house who had died unhappy. Her appearance matched descriptions of this woman, though positive identification was never made.
The Fading
Over the years, the apparition became increasingly faint. The footsteps that had accompanied it grew quieter. By 1889, the ghost had faded entirely and was never seen again.
Assessment
The Cheltenham Ghost case is considered one of the best-documented in British paranormal history. Despard’s scientific approach and detailed records make it a valuable case study in apparition phenomena.
