The Palatine Light
A burning ghost ship is seen off Block Island, marking a colonial tragedy.
The Palatine Light
The Palatine Light is a phantom ship seen burning off Block Island, Rhode Island. According to legend, it is the ghost of the Princess Augusta, a ship full of Palatine German immigrants that wrecked in 1738.
The Tragedy
The Princess Augusta was carrying immigrants from Germany to Philadelphia. After storms, disease, and mutinous crew, the ship wrecked on Block Island. Stories differ on what happened next, but the ship allegedly burned with passengers aboard.
The Apparition
Fishermen and islanders report seeing a burning ship at sea on winter nights. The vessel appears in flames, moving against the wind. Screams are sometimes heard. The vision persists for minutes before fading.
The Witnesses
John Greenleaf Whittier immortalized the Palatine Light in poetry. Witnesses over nearly three centuries have described the same phenomenon. The burning ship appears irregularly but persistently.
The History
Historical records suggest the actual wreck was more mundane than the legend. But something is seen burning at sea where it should not be. The light continues to appear.
Assessment
The Palatine Light combines historical tragedy with ongoing supernatural phenomenon. Whether the ghost ship recalls a real atrocity or the legend has taken on independent life, the light still burns off Block Island.
