The Ghosts of Hampton Court

Hampton Court Palace, once the favorite residence of Henry VIII, is one of England’s most haunted locations. The ghosts of two of his wives, Jane Seymour and Catherine Howard, are among many spirits reported within its ancient walls.

Jane Seymour

Jane Seymour, who died after giving birth to the future Edward VI, appears dressed in white near the Clock Court. She carries a candle and walks silently through the corridors. Her ghost seems unaware of observers.

Catherine Howard

Catherine Howard was arrested at Hampton Court and dragged screaming to her fate. Her ghost runs shrieking through the Haunted Gallery, reliving her desperate attempt to reach Henry and beg for mercy. Visitors have fainted from the intensity of the experience.

The Skeletor Figure

In 2003, CCTV cameras captured a mysterious figure in period dress throwing open fire doors. Staff called it the “Skeletor” due to its skeletal appearance. The footage has never been explained.

Other Ghosts

The palace is also haunted by the ghost of a nurse who once cared for a young prince, Archbishop Laud who was imprisoned there, and various serving staff from throughout the centuries.

Assessment

Hampton Court’s layers of history have created layers of hauntings. The trauma experienced within its walls—executions, imprisonments, and broken hearts—seems to echo through the centuries. Staff and visitors continue to report experiences.
