The Luminous Child of Chillingham
A glowing child's skeleton was found walled up in this medieval castle.
The Luminous Child of Chillingham
Chillingham Castle in Northumberland is one of Britain’s most haunted locations. Among its many ghosts, the Blue Boy, or Radiant Boy, was most famous. His identity was discovered when renovations uncovered a child’s skeleton walled up in a room.
The Appearances
For centuries, guests in a specific bedroom reported waking to see a blue halo of light, within which a young boy in blue clothing would appear. His cries were heard throughout the castle. The apparition appeared regularly.
The Discovery
During renovations in the 1920s, workers opened up a section of wall near the bedroom where the Blue Boy appeared. Inside they found the bones of a child, along with blue fabric fragments. The child had been walled up alive.
The Theory
The child is believed to have been murdered during a political intrigue, possibly as leverage or revenge against his family. Sealing him in the wall ensured he would never be found. His spirit, however, refused to be silenced.
The Resolution
After the bones were given a proper Christian burial, the Blue Boy sightings ceased. The ghost, having been discovered and honored, no longer needed to appear.
Other Ghosts
Chillingham remains thoroughly haunted despite the Blue Boy’s departure. Lady Mary Berkeley searches for her husband. Tortured prisoners from the dungeon still scream. The castle has been continuously haunted for centuries.
Assessment
The Blue Boy of Chillingham demonstrates how ghost activity can be linked to undiscovered remains. His cessation after proper burial suggests some ghosts seek recognition and peace rather than haunting for its own sake.
