Berry Pomeroy Castle

Hidden in woodland near Totnes, Berry Pomeroy Castle is considered one of England’s most haunted—and most dangerous—castles.

The White Lady

Margaret Pomeroy was imprisoned in the dungeons by her jealous sister Eleanor:

  • Both sisters loved the same man
  • Eleanor locked Margaret in the dungeon
  • She was left to starve to death
  • Her ghost walks the dungeons, reaching out to visitors
  • She appears as a white, emaciated figure
  • Those who see her face allegedly die within a year

The Blue Lady

The Blue Lady is even more disturbing:

  • The daughter of a Norman lord
  • She gave birth to her father’s child (incest)
  • Overcome with shame, she strangled the infant
  • She now lures men toward the castle ruins
  • She appears beautiful at first, then reveals her true nature
  • Those who follow her are found dead

Strange Phenomena

Camera Malfunctions

Photographers consistently report:

  • Cameras refusing to work within the castle walls
  • Batteries draining instantly
  • Photos showing unexplained mists and figures
  • Equipment functioning normally once outside

Other Activity

  • Temperature drops in the dungeon
  • Screaming and crying at night
  • A sense of overwhelming dread
  • Visitors becoming violently ill
  • Children refusing to enter certain areas

Investigation

English Heritage staff report:

  • Unexplained footsteps on the ramparts
  • Doors slamming in empty buildings
  • A figure watching from tower windows
  • Cold spots that move through rooms

Berry Pomeroy Castle is open to visitors, though many refuse to enter the dungeons.
