Bhangarh Fort
India’s most famous haunted location—so feared that the government legally forbids anyone from entering after dark.
The Fort
Built in 1573 by King Bhagwant Das:
- A grand fortified city in Rajasthan
- Temples, palaces, and markets
- Home to thousands of people
- Abandoned in the 17th century
- Now a ruin—and a legend
The Curse Legends
The Sorcerer’s Curse
The most popular legend:
- A sorcerer named Singhia fell in love with Princess Ratnavati
- She was known for her extraordinary beauty
- Singhia tried to enchant her with magic oil
- Ratnavati discovered the plot
- She threw the oil at a boulder
- The boulder rolled down and crushed Singhia
- Dying, he cursed the entire city to death
The Sadhu’s Curse
Another version:
- A holy man named Guru Balu Nath lived on the hill
- The king built the fort but was warned
- “If the shadow of your walls touches my shrine, the city will be destroyed”
- A later king built walls too high
- The shadow touched the shrine
- That very night, the city was attacked and destroyed
The Abandonment
Whatever the cause:
- The city was abandoned suddenly
- Residents fled and never returned
- The fort fell into ruin
- Stories of hauntings began immediately
- Local villagers refused to go near
The Official Warning
The Archaeological Survey of India:
- Maintains a sign at the entrance
- Entry is forbidden between sunset and sunrise
