Borley Church: The Rectory’s Surviving Haunt

Borley Church stands in the heart of “the most haunted village in England,” a title earned when the notorious Borley Rectory stood nearby. The rectory burned down in 1939 and was demolished in 1944, but the medieval church remains—and so do its ghosts. The phantom nun, spectral coaches, and mysterious lights that made Borley infamous still appear in the churchyard.

The History

Medieval Church

The Church of St George dates from the 12th century, with later medieval additions. It has served the tiny hamlet of Borley for nearly 900 years.

The Rectory Era

The Victorian rectory built in 1862 became famous in the 1920s and 30s as Britain’s most haunted house, investigated by Harry Price. Its alleged phenomena included:

  • A phantom nun
  • Poltergeist activity
  • Mysterious writing on walls
  • Spectral coaches

The rectory burned and was demolished, but the phenomena continued.

The Nun’s Legend

Local legend tells of a medieval nun from Bures who eloped with a monk from Borley. They were caught, and she was bricked up alive while he was hanged. Her ghost walks the “Nun’s Walk” by the church.

The Hauntings

The Phantom Nun

The nun is Borley’s most famous ghost:

  • Seen walking in the churchyard
  • Dressed in dark habit
  • Her face is sometimes visible, sometimes hidden
  • She appears at dusk
  • Witnessed for centuries, before and after the rectory

The Spectral Coach

A phantom coach and horses has been seen:

  • Driving through the village
  • It makes no sound
  • Visible for moments before vanishing
  • Connected to the rectory legend
  • Possibly carrying the nun to her fate

Churchyard Lights

Mysterious lights appear in the churchyard:

  • Moving between graves
  • Sometimes red, sometimes blue
  • They resist explanation
  • Photographed multiple times
  • Possibly spirits of the dead

The Church Interior

Inside the church:

  • Cold spots occur
  • Footsteps are heard
  • The organ has played by itself
  • Figures have been seen in the pews
  • The atmosphere is intensely charged

The Grave of the Nun

Human remains were allegedly found under the rectory:

  • They were reburied in the churchyard
  • The grave may contain the legendary nun
  • Activity sometimes centers on this spot
  • Whether genuine remains or not, they’re treated as sacred

After the Rectory

Since the rectory’s destruction:

  • The church has become the focus of activity
  • Investigators continue to visit
  • The nun still walks
  • The village remains “most haunted”
  • Phenomena have not decreased

Modern Activity

Borley Church draws paranormal researchers:

  • It remains remarkably active
  • Photographs capture anomalies
  • EVP recordings are common
  • The nun appears to multiple witnesses
  • The legacy of the rectory lives on

Visiting

Borley Church is a working parish church open to visitors. The village is tiny and quiet—except for its ghosts.

Borley Rectory is gone, but Borley Church remains. The nun who walked the rector’s garden now walks the churchyard. The most haunted house in England is no more, but the most haunted village endures.
