The Cambridge Military Hospital was constructed in 1879 to serve the Aldershot Garrison and became one of Britain’s most important military medical facilities. For over a century, it treated wounded soldiers from conflicts ranging from the Boer War through both World Wars to modern deployments. The hospital closed in 1996, and the imposing Victorian building now stands largely abandoned. During its 117 years of operation, thousands of servicemen died within its walls, and many believe their spirits remain, unable to leave their final posting.

Witnesses report numerous sightings of phantom soldiers in uniforms from different eras, from Victorian redcoats to World War II servicemen and more modern military dress. These apparitions are often seen lying in beds in empty wards or walking the corridors as if still convalescing. Phantom nurses in period uniforms have been spotted conducting rounds, administering care to patients who are no longer there. The sounds of military boots marching, groans of pain, and the rattling of medical equipment echo through the abandoned corridors. Many visitors report hearing air raid sirens and explosions that correspond to WWII when the hospital treated blitz victims.

The surgical theaters, recovery wards, and the hospital’s mortuary are considered the most haunted areas. Investigators have documented sudden freezing temperatures, the smell of antiseptic and blood, and feelings of being touched by invisible hands. The chapel, where last rites were administered to dying soldiers, is said to be particularly active with reports of organ music, hymns sung by invisible voices, and the apparition of a military chaplain. EVP sessions have yielded recordings of soldiers calling out for medics, speaking in various languages, and what sounds like battlefield sounds. The basement morgue is regarded as especially intense, with multiple investigators reporting aggressive encounters and overwhelming sensations of death.
