Cane Hill Hospital opened its doors in 1883 as one of the largest asylums in Britain, designed to accommodate over 2,000 psychiatric patients. The imposing Victorian Gothic structure dominated the Surrey countryside for over a century before its closure in 1991. During its 108 years of operation, the hospital witnessed the evolution of psychiatric treatment from Victorian restraint methods to modern therapies, but also countless deaths and untold suffering among its patient population. The decaying buildings have since become infamous for intense paranormal activity.

Visitors to the abandoned site report encountering the apparitions of former patients, often appearing disoriented and wearing hospital gowns from different eras. Shadow figures have been seen moving through the corridors, and many witnesses describe hearing anguished screams, crying, and the rattling of chains that echo through empty wards. The most disturbing reports come from the former isolation cells and the building that housed the criminally insane, where investigators have experienced violent poltergeist activity, including objects being thrown and sudden, aggressive cold spots.

The hospital’s chapel, morgue, and treatment rooms are considered paranormal hotspots. Multiple investigation teams have documented unexplained voices, footsteps, and the sounds of doors slamming when no one else is present. Some visitors have reported feeling physically ill or experiencing panic attacks in certain areas of the complex, attributed by many to the residual energy of trauma and suffering. Despite partial demolition of the site, witnesses continue to report paranormal phenomena in the remaining structures.
