The Battle
In September 1863, the second bloodiest battle of the war resulted in 34,000+ casualties in a Confederate victory marked by brutal close combat. The Cherokee name means “River of Death.”
Old Green Eyes
The famous ghost features glowing green eyes and may be a Confederate soldier or an earlier entity. It has been seen for over 150 years by many witnesses.
The Lady in White
The bride searches eternally for her fiancé who died in battle. She died of grief and now walks the fields where her weeping can be heard.
The Phenomena
Reports include marching sounds, cannon fire, screaming, apparitions, and a heavy atmosphere that pervades the battlefield.
Snodgrass Hill
This intense area was the last stand location with heavy casualties and remains very active. Orbs have been photographed, and soldiers are still seen there.
Today
The National Park offers ghost tours, with rangers reporting sightings regularly. Night visits are permitted, research is conducted, and the location remains extremely active.
