Chillingham Castle
With over 100 documented ghosts, torture chamber spirits, and the famous Blue Boy, Chillingham may be England's most haunted castle.
Chillingham Castle
This 800-year-old fortress on the Scottish border has witnessed such violence that over 100 ghosts are said to roam its halls.
The Blue Boy
The most famous ghost appears in the Pink Room:
- Guests wake to a blue flash and a child’s cries
- A blue halo appears over the bed
- The spirit of a boy in blue clothing materializes
During renovations, workers discovered a child’s bones and blue clothing hidden within the walls near the fireplace. After the bones were given a proper burial, sightings decreased—but didn’t stop.
The Torture Chamber
John Sage, the castle’s torturer, spent three years tormenting Scottish prisoners:
- The rack still stands in the chamber
- Sage is said to have killed 50 prisoners personally
- He was eventually hanged when he murdered his lover
- His ghost, accompanied by screams of victims, haunts the dungeon
Lady Mary Berkeley
After her husband left her for another woman, Lady Mary wandered the castle in despair until her death. Now:
- The rustle of her dress is heard in corridors
- Cold drafts follow visitors
- She appears searching for her husband
Other Spirits
The Pantry Ghost appears as a pale white figure that emerges from the pantry and crosses to another room. The Grey Lady is seen in the Chapel where she weeps and prays. In the Inner Pantry, disembodied voices speak to each other, discussing events from centuries past.
Investigations
Chillingham hosts regular ghost tours and investigations. Documented phenomena include:
- EVPs in multiple languages
- Objects moving on camera
- Temperature drops of 20+ degrees
- Full-bodied apparitions captured on film
