The Beast of Land Between the Lakes
A werewolf-like creature stalks the recreation area on the Kentucky-Tennessee border.
The Beast of Land Between the Lakes
Land Between the Lakes is a national recreation area between Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley. Since 1982, visitors have reported encounters with a large, werewolf-like creature. Some accounts include horrific violence.
The Legend
The most extreme story claims that in 1982, a Boy Scout troop was attacked and killed by a beast. The government allegedly covered up the incident to protect tourism. No documentation supports this story.
The Sightings
Beyond the legend, credible witnesses report seeing a large, bipedal, wolf-like creature in the area. It stands seven feet tall, is covered in dark fur, and has an elongated snout. It moves on two legs but can run on all fours.
The Setting
Land Between the Lakes is heavily forested and sparsely populated. The area has Native American history and was depopulated when the lakes were created. Something could conceivably hide in its wilderness.
The Connection
Some link the beast to dogman sightings reported throughout the Midwest. Others suggest a supernatural origin related to the area’s history.
Assessment
The Beast of Land Between the Lakes may be legend, misidentification, or genuine cryptid. The extreme claims about the Boy Scout massacre are likely fabrication, but the creature sightings come from otherwise credible witnesses.
