Giglioli’s Whale

On September 4, 1867, Italian zoologist Enrico Hillyer Giglioli observed an unknown species of whale from the deck of the Italian warship Magenta. Despite his scientific credentials and detailed description, the species has never been identified.

The Sighting

Giglioli observed the whale for some time at close range. He was an experienced naturalist who knew whale species well. What he saw did not match any known species.

The Description

The whale was about 60 feet long with two large dorsal fins, something no known whale species possesses. Its color was grayish with lighter patches. Giglioli sketched the animal and documented its behavior.

Scientific Standing

Giglioli was a respected scientist, not prone to exaggeration. He published his observation in scientific literature. The whale was named in his honor but remains unverified as a species.

Possible Explanations

Skeptics suggest Giglioli saw two whales swimming in formation, creating the illusion of two dorsal fins. Supporters note his expertise and the duration of his observation. The sighting has never been satisfactorily explained.

Assessment

Giglioli’s whale represents a scientific mystery. A credible observer documented something that should not exist according to known whale taxonomy. The deep ocean may hold species unknown to science.
