The Hastings Sea Serpent

In the summer of 1912, fishermen operating off Hastings in East Sussex encountered a creature that defied explanation. The massive serpentine animal they described joined a long tradition of sea serpent sightings in the English Channel.

The Sighting

On a calm July morning, a fishing boat was working several miles off Hastings when crew members noticed unusual disturbance in the water. What emerged was a creature they estimated at forty feet or more in length, with a long neck, small head, and dark coloring.

The Description

The fishermen described the creature as serpentine but with distinct differences from any snake. It had what appeared to be flippers or fins along its body. Its head was described as similar to a horse’s, with large dark eyes. The creature observed the boat for several minutes before submerging.

Historical Context

The English Channel has a long history of sea serpent reports. Medieval chronicles mention sea monsters off the Sussex coast. Similar creatures were reported throughout the 19th century by sailors and coastguards. The 1912 sighting fit an established pattern.

The Investigation

The fishermen reported their sighting to harbor authorities in Hastings. Their account was taken seriously given their experience and reputation. A brief search was organized but found nothing. The story appeared in local newspapers but received little national attention.

Assessment

The Hastings sea serpent remains unexplained. Whether the fishermen encountered an unknown species, a misidentified known animal, or something else entirely cannot be determined. Their detailed description and willingness to report the sighting suggest genuine belief in what they witnessed.
