The Loveland Frog

The Loveland Frog, also called the Loveland Frogman, is a cryptid reported near Loveland, Ohio. Described as a bipedal frog-like creature standing about four feet tall, it has been reported sporadically since 1955.

The 1955 Sighting

A businessman driving along a road near the Little Miami River claimed to see three bipedal frog-like creatures standing on the roadside. He observed them for several minutes. One appeared to hold a device that emitted sparks. The witness reported the sighting to police.

The 1972 Encounters

The most famous sightings occurred in March 1972 when two Loveland police officers independently reported seeing a similar creature. Officer Ray Shockey saw it crouching by the road; when his headlights illuminated it, the creature stood upright and climbed over a guardrail into the Little Miami River.

Two weeks later, Officer Mark Matthews shot at a creature matching the same description that he found in his headlights. He later downplayed the sighting, suggesting it was just an escaped iguana.

Description

Witnesses describe a humanoid creature about four feet tall with leathery skin, webbed hands and feet, and the facial features of a frog or lizard. It stands and walks on two legs.

Assessment

The Loveland Frog remains one of Ohio’s most persistent mysteries. The police witnesses lend credibility, though Officer Matthews’ later skepticism complicates the narrative. Whether a real creature, misidentified animal, or local legend, the Frogman has become an icon of Ohio weirdness.
