The Drakelow Tunnels comprise a massive underground complex excavated into sandstone beneath Blakeshall Estate near Kidderminster during World War II. Built between 1941 and 1942, the tunnels served as a shadow factory for the Rover car company, producing aircraft engines away from German bombing. The complex consists of 3.5 miles of tunnels on three levels, housing workshops, offices, storage areas, and a network of corridors. Over 500 workers labored in the tunnels during the war, and at least one worker died during construction. After the war, the site was converted into a Regional Government HQ for use during nuclear war, complete with dormitories, communications equipment, and supplies to sustain government officials during the Cold War.

Since opening for tours, the Drakelow Tunnels have become renowned for intense paranormal activity. Visitors and investigators report seeing shadow figures moving through the tunnels, hearing disembodied voices and machinery sounds from the wartime factory period, and experiencing sudden temperature drops. The most commonly reported apparition is a male worker in 1940s overalls who appears solid before vanishing when approached. Security guards have abandoned night shifts after experiencing doors slamming, lights turning on and off, and the overwhelming sensation of being followed through the deserted corridors.

Specific areas within the complex have particularly active reputations. The canteen area frequently echoes with the sounds of conversation and clattering dishes despite being empty. The old hospital room triggers feelings of dread and nausea in sensitive visitors. Electronic equipment malfunctions regularly in certain tunnels, with cameras draining batteries instantly and audio recorders capturing unexplained voices. Some investigators believe the combination of wartime anxiety, sudden death during construction, and Cold War paranoia has created a powerful residual haunting. The tunnels remain open for guided tours, attracting ghost hunters from around the world who consistently document paranormal phenomena in this underground labyrinth.
