Eilean Mòr Keepers Disappearance

Three lighthouse keepers on the remote island vanished without explanation. The relief boat found cold ashes, a stopped clock, and an overturned chair. The logbook described impossible storms. But weather records show calm seas. Where did they go?

Eilean Mòr’s keepers vanished into legend.

The Flannan Isles

The location was remote. There were seven islands in the Atlantic Ocean where a lighthouse was built in 1899. Three keepers were always stationed there on rotating duty.

The Log

Strange entries appeared between December 12-15. They described severe storms unlike anything ever seen before. The men were noted as “quiet,” yet no storms were recorded officially during that time.

The Last Entry

On December 15, 1900, the final entry read “Storm ended, sea calm” followed by “God is over all.” Then nothing. No more entries. What happened next remains unknown.

The Relief Ship

On December 26, the Hesperus arrived. No one greeted the ship. The keepers were missing. Provisions were untouched. It was a complete mystery.

What was found tells us nothing. No bodies were ever recovered. No wreckage was discovered. No explanation emerged. The men had simply gone.

Today

The lighthouse is now automated with no keepers required. The mystery remains unsolved, though tourist interest continues. The legend endures.
