Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery
Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery, located in the Rubio Woods Forest Preserve near Midlothian, Illinois, is widely considered one of the most haunted cemeteries in the United States. The abandoned graveyard has been the site of hundreds of paranormal reports.
The History
The cemetery was established in the 1830s and fell into disuse by the 1960s. Vandalism, satanic rituals, and grave desecration followed. The bodies of gangland murder victims were allegedly dumped in the adjacent lagoon during Prohibition.
The Phenomena
Reports include a phantom farmhouse that appears and vanishes, a spectral farmer and his plow horse, a woman in white carrying an infant, two-headed apparitions, and mysterious lights. Strange figures have been photographed in the cemetery.
The White Lady
The most famous apparition is a woman in white who sits on a particular tombstone. In 1991, she was photographed sitting on the “checkered” gravestone. The photograph, taken during a Ghost Research Society investigation, shows a partially transparent figure.
The Investigation
Bachelor’s Grove has been investigated by numerous paranormal groups. Electronic voice phenomena are commonly recorded. Electromagnetic readings spike erratically. Many visitors report feeling watched or touched.
Assessment
Bachelor’s Grove’s reputation attracts both genuine researchers and thrill-seekers. The history of desecration and violence may explain why so many spirits seem bound to this lonely place. It remains one of America’s most active paranormal sites.
