The Ghosts of Castle Howard
One of England's greatest houses hosts spectral residents.
The Ghosts of Castle Howard
Castle Howard, the magnificent baroque palace in North Yorkshire, has been home to the Howard family for over 300 years. The house and its grounds, famous from “Brideshead Revisited,” host several ghosts from its long history.
The House
Sir John Vanbrugh designed Castle Howard for the 3rd Earl of Carlisle beginning in 1699. The dramatic baroque architecture and extensive grounds make it one of England’s most impressive houses. The family continues to live there.
The Third Earl
The ghost of Charles Howard, the 3rd Earl who commissioned the house, has been reported in the main halls. He appears to be inspecting his creation, walking through the rooms with proprietary interest.
The Grey Lady
A woman in grey has been seen in the Long Gallery and bedrooms. She moves silently through the house before fading from view. Her identity is unknown, though she is presumed to be a former family member or servant.
The Fire Ghosts
Castle Howard was devastated by fire in 1940, destroying the dome and much of the central building. Since restoration, some staff have reported seeing figures in the areas most affected by the fire. These may be victims or witnesses of the tragedy.
The Grounds
The extensive grounds, including the famous Temple of the Four Winds, have their own supernatural reputation. Figures have been seen walking the paths at dusk. The mausoleum, where many Howards are buried, generates feelings of unease.
Assessment
Castle Howard’s combination of architectural magnificence and three centuries of family history has created conditions for haunting. The fire of 1940 added trauma that may have intensified supernatural activity.
