The Ghosts of Chichester Cathedral

Chichester Cathedral has been a site of Christian worship since the 11th century. The beautiful medieval building has witnessed centuries of prayer, celebration, and mourning. It has also accumulated a collection of ghost stories that span its long history.

The Cathedral

The present cathedral was begun in 1076 after the Norman Conquest moved the Sussex bishopric from Selsey to Chichester. The building has been modified and repaired over the centuries but retains its Norman and Gothic character. The spire collapsed in 1861 and was rebuilt.

The Grey Monk

A Benedictine monk in grey robes has been seen in the cathedral, particularly in the area of the choir and retrochoir. He appears to be in prayer, moving slowly as if in procession. His presence is often accompanied by a feeling of peace.

The Mystery Woman

A woman in dark Victorian mourning dress has been seen kneeling in prayer in the nave. When approached, she fades from view. Her identity and the source of her apparent grief are unknown, but her sorrow is palpable.

The Spire Ghost

Since the 1861 spire collapse, which killed several people, a figure has been seen near the base of the rebuilt spire. The apparition appears distressed, perhaps reliving the disaster. Strange sounds have been heard, suggesting falling masonry.

The Choir

Cathedral musicians have reported hearing singing when the choir is empty. The voices are described as male, singing plainchant in Latin. Some attribute this to residual energy from centuries of daily services performed in the building.

Assessment

Chichester Cathedral represents nearly a thousand years of concentrated spiritual energy. The countless prayers offered within its walls may have created a permanent supernatural atmosphere that manifests as the reported phenomena.
