Chillingham Castle

Chillingham Castle in Northumberland has been described as the most haunted castle in Britain. With a history stretching back to the 12th century and a notorious torture chamber, the castle has accumulated centuries of ghosts.

The Blue Boy

The most famous ghost is the Blue Boy, who appears at midnight in the Pink Room. A blue halo of light forms near the old fireplace, and the figure of a young boy materializes. During renovations, workers found the bones of a child and fragments of blue cloth hidden in the wall. After the bones were given a Christian burial, sightings decreased.

The Torture Chamber

The castle’s torture chamber, complete with original implements, is particularly active. Visitors report feeling extreme discomfort, hearing screams, and sensing presence. The ghost of John Sage, the castle’s torturer, is said to roam this area.

Lady Mary Berkeley

Lady Mary Berkeley’s ghost searches the castle for her husband, Lord Grey, who abandoned her for her sister. Her rustling skirts are heard in the corridors.

The Phantom Funeral

A ghostly funeral procession has been seen crossing the grounds, complete with pallbearers, mourners, and a horse-drawn hearse.
