The Haunting of Farnham Castle

Farnham Castle in Surrey served as the residence of the Bishops of Winchester for over 800 years. The castle and its adjacent palace have accumulated numerous ghost stories reflecting their long religious connection.

The Castle

Henry of Blois, Bishop of Winchester, built the castle keep around 1138. The bishops continued to use Farnham until the 1920s. The castle is now used for conferences and events, while the keep is managed by English Heritage.

The Bishop’s Ghost

A figure in bishop’s robes has been seen in the Great Hall and chapel. He appears to be inspecting his domain, moving through rooms with proprietary interest. His identity is unknown, as dozens of bishops lived at Farnham.

The Grey Nun

Despite being a bishop’s residence, a nun has been reported in the castle grounds. She may be connected to the medieval period when religious women occasionally visited or sought sanctuary. Her grey habit and downcast face suggest sorrow.

The Civil War Soldier

Farnham Castle was damaged during the English Civil War. A soldier from that period has been seen on the ramparts and in the ruined keep. He appears to be on guard duty, unaware that the war he fought ended centuries ago.

The Tunnel

Legend speaks of a tunnel connecting the castle to Waverley Abbey, three miles away. Strange sounds and sightings have been reported in areas believed to be near this tunnel, whether it exists or not.

Assessment

Farnham Castle’s eight centuries as an episcopal residence created a unique atmosphere. The bishops, their servants, soldiers, and visitors have all contributed to the layers of spiritual presence reported within its walls.
