The Ghosts of Firle Place

Firle Place, set beneath the South Downs in East Sussex, has been home to the Gage family for over 500 years. The Tudor house, later Georgianized, contains fine art and family treasures. It also contains ghosts that span the family’s long occupation.

The House

The Gage family acquired Firle in the 15th century. The house has been modified over centuries but retains its family character. The estate still produces wine and the family still lives there.

The Cavalier Gage

A figure in Civil War-era clothing has been seen in the house. The Gages were Royalists and suffered for their loyalty. This may be a family member who died in the conflict or its aftermath.

The Grey Lady

A woman in grey roams the corridors and upper floors. Her identity is unknown, though she is presumed to be a Gage wife or daughter. Her melancholy appearance suggests an unhappy history.

The Priest

The Gages were a Catholic family during the perilous centuries of persecution. A figure in clerical dress has been seen, perhaps a priest who ministered to the family secretly. A priest hole may exist somewhere in the house.

The American Connection

General Thomas Gage, who commanded British forces at the outbreak of the American Revolution, was born at Firle. Some have wondered if his conflicted ghost returns to his birthplace.

Assessment

Firle Place’s five centuries of Gage family occupation have created deep spiritual impressions. The house represents continuity that transcends individual lives and may bind the dead to their ancestral home.
