The LaLaurie Mansion
A French Quarter mansion where enslaved people were tortured is now one of the most haunted buildings in America.
The LaLaurie Mansion
The LaLaurie Mansion at 1140 Royal Street in New Orleans is one of America’s most haunted buildings. In 1834, a fire revealed a torture chamber where Madame Delphine LaLaurie had inflicted horrific cruelty on enslaved people.
The Horror
On April 10, 1834, rescuers discovered enslaved people who had been tortured, mutilated, and starved. Some were chained to walls. Some had been subjected to crude medical experiments. LaLaurie fled and was never brought to justice.
The Haunting
Residents and visitors report screams and moans, ghostly figures of tortured victims, and overwhelming despair. The most frequent apparition is a young enslaved girl who fell from the roof while fleeing LaLaurie.
Famous owners include Nicolas Cage, who experienced paranormal activity. The mansion remains a highlight of New Orleans ghost tours.
