The Haunting of the Lewes Arms

The Lewes Arms, a historic pub in the county town of East Sussex, has served locals and visitors for over 500 years. The ancient building, with its low beams and crooked floors, is said to be one of the most haunted pubs in Sussex.

The Pub

The Lewes Arms dates from around 1500, making it one of the oldest pubs in Lewes. The building’s great age is evident in its uneven floors, massive beams, and accumulated atmosphere.

The Cavalier

A figure in Civil War-era clothing has been seen in the pub. Lewes was fiercely contested during the Civil War, and this may be a soldier who died in the conflict. He appears near the fireplace before fading.

The Barmaid

A young woman in period dress has been seen behind the bar. She appears to be serving customers who are not there. Some believe she died in the pub and continues her duties.

The Cellar Presence

The ancient cellars beneath the pub are considered particularly haunted. Staff have reported feeling presences, hearing footsteps, and seeing shadows moving. Some are reluctant to go down alone.

The Cold Spot

A specific area of the bar has a persistent cold spot that cannot be explained by drafts or ventilation. Customers sometimes move away from it without knowing why.

Assessment

The Lewes Arms’ five centuries of continuous use as a drinking establishment have created layers of human experience that manifest as the reported phenomena. The pub’s ghosts seem to be permanent regulars.
