West Virginia Penitentiary

The West Virginia Penitentiary in Moundsville operated from 1876 to 1995. In its history, nearly 1,000 inmates died within its Gothic walls. Today, it is one of America’s most active paranormal locations.

The History

The prison was known for brutality and overcrowding. Executions were carried out in the basement. Prisoners were tortured in the “Sugar Shack,” a punishment cell. Violence between inmates was common and often deadly.

The Shadow Figure

A distinct shadow figure is seen throughout the prison, particularly in the Sugar Shack area. It is darker than ordinary shadows and moves independently. Investigators who have encountered it report feeling intense malevolence.

The Death Row Inmates

Executed prisoners seem to remain in the basement execution area. Electronic voice phenomena record their voices. Cold spots coincide with the locations where they died. Their spirits are angry.

The Investigations

The prison has been investigated by numerous teams and featured on television. The volume of evidence collected is extraordinary: voices, apparitions, physical contact, and equipment malfunction all occur regularly.

Assessment

West Virginia Penitentiary’s history of violence and death has created one of America’s most powerful hauntings. The spirits of those who suffered and died there seem unable or unwilling to leave. The prison remains a destination for serious paranormal investigation.
