The Ghosts of Newhaven Fort
A Victorian fortress guarding the Channel hosts military ghosts.
The Ghosts of Newhaven Fort
Newhaven Fort, built in the 1860s to defend against French invasion, is one of the largest fortifications in the south of England. Now a museum, the fort is said to be haunted by the soldiers who served there over its 130 years of military use.
The Fort
The fort was built between 1864 and 1871 as part of the Palmerston Forts, defensive positions to counter a perceived French threat. It remained in military use until 1962 and saw action during both World Wars.
The Soldier Ghosts
Figures in military uniform from various periods have been seen in the fort. Some wear Victorian dress; others wear the uniforms of the World Wars. They appear to be on duty, patrolling the ramparts and tunnels.
The Tunnels
The extensive tunnel system beneath the fort generates the most intense reports of supernatural activity. Cold spots, unexplained sounds, and feelings of being watched are commonly reported in the underground passages.
The Wartime Presence
The fort’s role in World War II defense of the Channel left particular impressions. Figures in 1940s uniforms have been seen, and the sounds of radio equipment and voices have been reported in the wartime operations rooms.
The Museum Staff
Staff at the museum have accumulated numerous stories of unusual experiences. Exhibits are found moved, doors open on their own, and footsteps echo through empty galleries.
Assessment
Newhaven Fort’s century of military occupation concentrated human activity and anxiety within its walls. The soldiers who watched for invasion and manned the defenses during wartime seem to continue their duties.
