The Old Charleston Jail

The Old City Jail in Charleston, South Carolina, operated from 1802 to 1939. It housed pirates, enslaved people awaiting sale, Civil War prisoners, and famous criminals. Today it is considered one of the most haunted buildings in America.

The History

The jail witnessed enormous human suffering over its 137 years. Conditions were brutal. Disease was rampant. Executions took place on the grounds. Among its notable prisoners were pirates and serial killer Lavinia Fisher.

Lavinia Fisher

The most famous ghost is Lavinia Fisher, often called America’s first female serial killer. She and her husband operated an inn where they allegedly murdered guests. She was hanged in 1820 and reportedly cursed Charleston with her final breath.

Other Spirits

Visitors report the ghosts of Confederate and Union soldiers from the Civil War period. Enslaved people held before auction are sensed. Former guards and prisoners from various eras appear throughout the building.

Investigation

Ghost tours operate nightly. The jail has been investigated by numerous paranormal teams and featured on television. Consistent reports of apparitions, voices, and physical contact suggest genuine activity.

Assessment

The Old Charleston Jail’s long history of suffering and death has apparently left a powerful imprint. From pirates to serial killers, the spirits of its former residents seem reluctant to leave.
