The Ghosts of Powderham Castle
The Courtenay family's ancient seat hosts ancestral spirits.
The Ghosts of Powderham Castle
Powderham Castle in Devon has been home to the Courtenay family for over 600 years. The medieval fortress, expanded over centuries, contains numerous reported ghosts including family members, servants, and a phantom cavalier.
The Castle
Sir Philip Courtenay built Powderham Castle between 1391 and 1420. The family has lived there ever since, making it one of the longest continuous family occupancies in England. The castle has been expanded and modified but retains its medieval core.
The Grey Lady
A woman in grey haunts the Long Gallery. She is believed to be a Courtenay family member who died in the castle centuries ago. Her silent walks through the gallery are witnessed by visitors and staff alike.
The Cavalier
A man in Civil War-era clothing has been seen in the grounds and certain rooms. The Courtenays were Royalists, and the castle was attacked by Parliamentarian forces. The cavalier may be a defender who died in the assault.
The Music Room
The Music Room has a particular reputation for supernatural activity. Visitors have reported hearing music when no one is playing. Some have seen a figure seated at the piano or harpsichord, only for it to vanish when approached.
The Servants
Ghosts of servants have been reported in the service areas of the castle. These figures, dressed in period clothing, appear to be going about their duties, unaware that the household they served no longer exists.
Assessment
Powderham Castle’s unbroken family connection over six centuries has created layers of spiritual presence. The Courtenays who lived and died there seem reluctant to leave their ancestral home.
