The Ghosts of Preston Manor
A historic manor house hosts multiple spirits from across the centuries.
The Ghosts of Preston Manor
Preston Manor in Brighton has been called one of England’s most haunted houses. The Grade II listed building, now a museum, has been the site of paranormal activity for over four centuries. Multiple spirits are said to inhabit its elegant rooms.
The Manor
A house has stood on the Preston Manor site since at least the 13th century. The current building dates primarily from 1738, with later additions. The Stanford family owned the manor from 1794 until 1932, when it was bequeathed to the town of Brighton.
The White Lady
The most frequently seen apparition is the White Lady, believed to be Lady Eleanor Hamilton. She is seen gliding through the house, particularly on the staircase and in the bedrooms. Her appearances are often preceded by the scent of perfume and a sudden drop in temperature.
The Franciscan Friar
A monk in brown robes has been seen in the gardens and grounds. He is believed to date from the medieval period when the site may have had religious connections. His appearance is always silent, and he walks with his head bowed as if in prayer.
The Grey Lady
Distinct from the White Lady, a grey figure has been seen in the servants’ quarters and kitchen areas. She is believed to be a former servant who died in the house. Her presence is often accompanied by the sound of footsteps on the back stairs.
Modern Investigations
Preston Manor has been investigated by numerous paranormal research groups. Electronic voice phenomena have been recorded in multiple rooms. Temperature anomalies have been documented. Visitors and staff continue to report unexplained experiences.
The Museum
Now open to the public as a museum, Preston Manor offers ghost tours and investigation nights. The house’s authentic Edwardian interior provides an atmospheric setting for encountering its resident spirits.
Assessment
Preston Manor’s long history and multiple documented apparitions make it a significant site for paranormal research. The variety of spirits reported suggests layer upon layer of human experience impressed upon the building over centuries.
