The Queen Mary
A retired ocean liner now serving as a hotel is home to hundreds of reported ghost sightings and numerous documented deaths.
The Queen Mary
The RMS Queen Mary, a luxury ocean liner launched in 1936, is now permanently docked in Long Beach, California, serving as a hotel and tourist attraction. With at least forty-nine documented deaths during its sailing years and hundreds of reported ghost sightings since, it is considered one of the most haunted ships in the world.
History
The Queen Mary carried passengers across the Atlantic and served as a troop transport during World War II, earning the nickname “The Grey Ghost.” During the war, she was involved in an accident that killed hundreds of sailors on the escort ship HMS Curacoa.
The ship retired from service in 1967 and has been permanently docked in Long Beach since.
The Ghosts
Numerous spirits are said to haunt the ship. In the first-class swimming pool area, witnesses report seeing the ghosts of two women who drowned there. Wet footprints appear on the deck, and the sound of splashing comes from the empty pool.
In the engine room, the ghost of a young sailor crushed by a watertight door during a drill is frequently reported. Visitors have seen his apparition and heard knocking from the area where he died.
The first-class nursery is haunted by the spirit of a baby who died during the voyage. Crying is heard from the empty room.
Investigation
The Queen Mary has been investigated by numerous paranormal teams and featured on countless television programs. Investigators have captured EVP, photographed anomalies, and experienced unexplained phenomena.
The ship offers regular ghost tours and overnight paranormal investigations.
Assessment
The Queen Mary combines documented history with modern ghost reports. The number of deaths, the ship’s dramatic history, and the volume of witness reports make it one of the most credible haunted locations. Whether the spirits of those who died aboard still sail, the Queen Mary continues to draw those seeking paranormal encounters.
