Rose Hall’s White Witch

Rose Hall Great House in Jamaica is haunted by Annie Palmer, the White Witch. According to legend, Annie murdered three husbands, took slave lovers whom she killed when finished with them, and terrorized her plantation through dark magic before being killed by a vengeful slave.

The Legend

Annie Palmer supposedly learned voodoo in Haiti and used it to control her plantation and dispose of inconvenient husbands. Historical research suggests the legend may be embellished or invented, but the ghost stories persist regardless.

The Haunting

Visitors report seeing a woman in white on the balcony and grounds. Cold spots occur throughout the house. Objects move without cause. Staff have seen Annie in mirrors and heard footsteps in empty corridors.

The basement, where slaves were allegedly kept, produces reports of chains rattling, voices, and overwhelming dread.

Assessment

Rose Hall’s haunted reputation may exceed its historical reality. Whether Annie Palmer was truly a witch and murderess or simply a plantation mistress around whom dark legends accumulated, her ghost has become integral to Jamaican folklore. Visitors continue to report encounters with the White Witch.
