The Villisca Axe Murder House
The site of Iowa's most notorious unsolved murders is now one of America's most active haunted locations.
The Villisca Axe Murder House
On June 10, 1912, eight people were brutally murdered with an axe in a small white house in Villisca, Iowa. The crime was never solved. Today, the house is preserved as a historical site and is considered one of the most haunted locations in America.
The Murders
Josiah Moore, his wife Sarah, their four children, and two overnight guests were found murdered on the morning of June 10, 1912. All eight victims had been killed with the blunt end of an axe while they slept.
The killer had covered the victims’ faces with cloth, covered the mirrors, drawn all the blinds, and left a bowl of bloody water in the kitchen. Despite extensive investigation and two trials, no one was ever convicted.
The Haunting
Almost immediately after the murders, the house gained a reputation for being haunted. Subsequent occupants reported strange sounds, objects moving, and a general sense of unease.
In 1994, the house was restored to its 1912 appearance and opened for tours. Since then, thousands of visitors have reported paranormal experiences including children’s voices, objects moving on their own, and overwhelming feelings of sadness.
The children’s bedroom appears particularly active. Toys left on the floor are sometimes found rearranged. Cold spots are frequently reported. The location has been featured on numerous paranormal television programs and remains a popular destination for investigators.
