The Body Chute of Waverly Hills

Waverly Hills Sanatorium’s most notorious feature is the “body chute,” a 500-foot tunnel used to transport the dead away from living patients. Today, this tunnel is considered one of the most haunted locations in America.

The Purpose

When Waverly Hills was built in 1926, tuberculosis killed many patients. To maintain morale among the living, a tunnel was constructed to secretly transport bodies to waiting hearses at the bottom of the hill.

The Death Toll

Thousands of patients died at Waverly Hills during its operation. Each body passed through the tunnel on a motorized rail system. Some estimates suggest over 60,000 deaths, though lower figures are more historically accurate.

The Hauntings

The body chute generates consistent paranormal reports. Shadow figures are seen moving through the tunnel. Disembodied voices echo off the concrete walls. Visitors report being touched by invisible hands.

The Investigations

Every major paranormal television show has investigated the body chute. Results consistently include EVP recordings, thermal anomalies, and unexplained movement. The tunnel never fails to produce phenomena.

The Experience

Visitors describe overwhelming feelings of dread, sadness, and presence. Some feel physical symptoms including nausea and difficulty breathing. The atmosphere in the tunnel is oppressive even during daylight hours.

Assessment

The body chute represents a concentration of death energy in a confined space. Thousands of victims of a terrible disease passed through on their final journey. Their impressions remain, and visitors consistently perceive them.
