Waverly Hills Sanatorium
A former tuberculosis hospital where thousands died is now considered one of America's most haunted buildings.
Waverly Hills Sanatorium
Waverly Hills Sanatorium in Louisville, Kentucky, operated as a tuberculosis hospital from 1910 to 1961. During that time, thousands of patients died within its walls. Today, the massive building is considered one of the most haunted locations in America.
History
The facility began as a small hospital in 1910 but expanded to its massive size in 1926. Treatment options were limited, and the death rate was staggering. Bodies were removed through a 500-foot underground tunnel to avoid demoralizing living patients.
Haunting
The “body chute” or “death tunnel” is considered one of the most active paranormal locations. Visitors report cold spots, shadow figures, and overwhelming sensations.
Room 502 is associated with legends of nurse suicides. Visitors report seeing a female figure in the window and hearing screams. “The Creeper,” a dark figure that crawls along walls and ceilings in an unnatural manner, is one of the most frequently reported entities.
The building now offers tours and overnight investigations. Thousands have reported apparitions, disembodied voices, physical touches, and equipment malfunctions.
