The Whaley House
Built on the site of a hanging, the Whaley House is considered one of America's most haunted historic homes.
The Whaley House
The Whaley House in San Diego is considered by many to be the most haunted house in America. Built in 1857 by Thomas Whaley on the site of a public gallows, the house has accumulated ghosts throughout its history, including Whaley family members and at least one hanged criminal.
Yankee Jim
Before the house was built, James “Yankee Jim” Robinson was hanged on the site for grand larceny. Thomas Whaley witnessed the execution and later built his family home there. Yankee Jim’s ghost is still reported, with visitors hearing heavy footsteps upstairs.
The Whaley Family
Multiple family members are said to haunt the house. Thomas Whaley himself appears, often smelling of his favorite cigar. His wife Anna appears in the garden. Their daughter Violet, who committed suicide in the house, has been seen on the second floor.
Other Spirits
A child believed to have been a Whaley family playmate is seen running through the house. A woman in a Victorian dress drifts through the courtyard. A terrier-type dog, matching a Whaley family pet, has been spotted in the house.
