Jinn (or Djinn) are supernatural beings from Arabian and Islamic mythology, created from smokeless fire.

Jinn are:

  • Made from smokeless fire
  • Created before humans
  • Have free will
  • Can be Muslim or not
  • Live in a parallel world

Nature

Jinn can:

  • Be good, evil, or neutral
  • Shape-shift
  • Travel great distances instantly
  • Possess humans
  • Interbreed with humans

Types

Various classes exist:

  • Ifrit: powerful and evil
  • Marid: the most powerful
  • Ghul: graveyard dwelling
  • Sila: shape-shifters
  • Many others

Encounters

Jinn can be encountered:

  • In deserted places
  • At crossroads
  • In bathrooms
  • In abandoned buildings
  • At night especially

Protection

In Islamic tradition:

  • Recite Quran
  • Say “Bismillah”
  • Seek refuge in God
  • The adhan (call to prayer) drives them away

Solomon’s Control

According to tradition:

  • King Solomon could control Jinn
  • He used them to build the Temple
  • He had a magic ring
  • They served him until his death
