The Myrtles Plantation

Built in 1796 on a Tunica Indian burial ground, the Myrtles is considered one of America’s most haunted homes.

The Legend of Chloe

The most famous ghost is Chloe, a slave who worked in the house:

  • Her ear was cut off as punishment for eavesdropping
  • She wore a green turban to hide her disfigurement
  • She allegedly baked a poisoned birthday cake
  • Two of the Clark children and their mother died
  • Chloe was hanged by fellow slaves and thrown in the Mississippi

She is photographed more than any other ghost:

  • Seen peering around corners
  • Standing between buildings
  • Her reflection appears in mirrors

The Haunted Mirror

A large mirror in the house contains trapped souls:

  • Handprints appear on the inside of the glass
  • Faces materialize in the reflection
  • The figures of Sara Woodruff and her children are seen
  • No amount of cleaning removes the marks

William Winter

The plantation’s lawyer was shot on the front porch in 1871:

  • He staggered inside and up the stairs
  • He died on the 17th step
  • His footsteps are heard climbing those stairs
  • He always stops at the 17th step

Other Entities

Cleo

A former voodoo priestess buried on the grounds:

  • She appears during full moons
  • Candles light themselves
  • Strange chanting is heard

The Ghost Children

  • Two girls in white appear on the veranda
  • They ask guests to play
  • They vanish when approached

The Confederate Soldier

  • Seen standing guard outside
  • Appears during thunderstorms
  • Disappears when addressed

The Myrtles operates as a bed and breakfast. Guests frequently report paranormal encounters.
