Nocton Hall
Former RAF hospital where phantom nurses, wounded airmen spirits, and unexplained activity haunt the abandoned military medical wards.
Nocton Hall was requisitioned by the Royal Air Force in 1915 and converted into a military hospital, serving wounded servicemen through both World Wars and continuing as an RAF hospital until 1983. The facility treated thousands of injured airmen, many of whom died from their wounds in its wards. The grand mansion and its extensive hospital additions have been abandoned since the 1990s, and the site has developed a reputation as one of Britain’s most haunted former military hospitals, with paranormal activity linked to both its wartime service and earlier history.
The most frequently reported apparitions are those of nurses in vintage RAF nursing uniforms, walking the corridors as if still tending to patients. Witnesses describe seeing these phantom nurses pushing medication carts, checking empty rooms, and even appearing at bedsides in wards that have been stripped bare for decades. Spectral airmen, some showing visible war injuries, have been encountered throughout the complex, often appearing confused or in distress. The sounds of moaning, crying out in pain, and medical equipment are regularly heard despite the buildings being empty.
The former operating theaters, recovery wards, and morgue are considered the most actively haunted locations. Investigators report sudden temperature drops, the smell of antiseptic and ether manifesting from nowhere, and the sensation of being watched by unseen presences. Many witnesses describe feeling sudden waves of sadness or pain when entering certain rooms. EVP recordings have captured voices speaking in various accents consistent with the international personnel treated there, including calls for help and what sounds like military radio communications. The underground tunnels connecting the various buildings are said to be particularly oppressive, with reports of shadow figures and unexplained footsteps.
