The Nuckelavee:
- Emerges from the sea
- Brings plague and disaster
- Is responsible for crop failure
- Kills livestock with its breath
- Cannot cross fresh water
Description
The creature appears as:
- A skinless, horse-like body
- A rider fused to its back
- Yellow veins visible
- Single giant eye
- Enormous head
- Toxic breath
Appearance
The most disturbing features:
- No skin—muscles and blood visible
- Black blood pumping through veins
- Flippers instead of hooves
- Wide, gaping mouth
- Arms that reach the ground
Powers
The Nuckelavee can:
- Cause plague (Mortasheen)
- Wilt crops with its breath
- Kill livestock
- Drive people mad
- Control the weather
Protection
To avoid the Nuckelavee:
- Stay near fresh water
- It cannot cross streams
- Burn seaweed to anger it
- The “Mither o’ the Sea” confines it in summer
