The Nuckelavee is a horse-like demon from Orcadian mythology, considered the most horrifying of all Scottish demons.

The Nuckelavee:
- Is a sea demon
- Horse and rider fused as one
- Completely skinless
- Brings plague and drought
- Only stopped by fresh water
Appearance
The Nuckelavee appears as:
- Horse with rider attached
- No skin—muscles and veins visible
- Black blood in yellow veins
- Single giant eye
- Massive head that rolls
- Flippers instead of hooves
- Arms that reach the ground
Powers
Its terrible abilities:
- Breath wilts crops instantly
- Causes livestock epidemics
- Spreads the Mortasheen plague
- Poisons the air
- Its very presence kills
The Sea Mither
Its enemy:
- The Sea Mither (sea spirit)
- Confines it during summer
- When she weakens in winter
- The Nuckelavee is freed

Protection
Only defenses:
- Fresh running water
- It cannot cross streams
- The Mither of the Sea
- Burning seaweed angers it
- Never burn kelp
