This jail held pirates, slaves, and Civil War prisoners. Denmark Vesey was executed here for planning a slave rebellion. Lavinia Fisher, America's first female serial killer, cursed the crowd from the gallows.

The History
According to historical records, the jail operated from 1802 to 1939, holding prisoners, slaves, pirates, and Civil War POWs under horrific conditions that led to countless deaths within its walls.
Lavinia Fisher
America’s first female serial killer poisoned travelers at her inn before being executed in 1820. She wore her wedding dress to the hanging and cursed the crowd with her final words: “If you have a message for the Devil, give it to me!” Her defiant spirit is said to remain at the jail.
Denmark Vesey
This slave rebellion leader planned a major uprising in 1822, but was betrayed before it could begin. He was executed at this jail, and many believe his spirit remains, still fighting for the freedom that was denied him in life.
The Hauntings
Visitors report seeing Lavinia appearing in white, hearing screaming from the cells, chains rattling throughout the building, cold spots appearing everywhere, and physical sensations of being touched or pushed by unseen hands.
The Atmosphere
Visitors consistently report overwhelming feelings of sadness, anger, and desperation that permeate the building. Many cannot stay inside for long periods due to the intense emotional and spiritual energy that saturates every corner of the old jail.
