The Dybbuk Box

The Dybbuk Box is a wine cabinet that allegedly became haunted by a dybbuk, a malicious spirit from Jewish folklore. Every owner has reported strange occurrences, nightmares, and misfortune. It became the inspiration for the film “The Possession.”

The Origin

The box was purchased at an estate sale in 2001. It had belonged to a Holocaust survivor who brought it from Europe. The family refused to take it, claiming it was haunted by a dybbuk.

The First Owner

Kevin Mannis bought the box and gave it to his mother. She had a stroke the same day. He took it back and began experiencing nightmares. His employees who worked near it reported the same nightmare: an old hag.

The Subsequent Owners

The box was sold on eBay with full disclosure. Each subsequent owner reported health problems, nightmares, and bad luck. One owner documented his experiences extensively before becoming severely ill.

The Investigation

Paranormal researchers examined the box. It contained hair, dried flowers, a goblet, and mysterious items consistent with binding rituals. The objects suggested someone had deliberately trapped something inside.

Assessment

The Dybbuk Box may be genuinely haunted, may carry a psychological contagion, or may be an elaborate hoax. But the consistent experiences of multiple owners, unconnected to each other, suggest something unusual about the ordinary-looking wine cabinet.
