The Georgia Guidestones

The Georgia Guidestones were a granite monument erected in 1980 in Elberton, Georgia. Commissioned by an anonymous person using the pseudonym “R.C. Christian,” the structure contained guidelines for humanity in eight languages. It was destroyed by bombing in 2022.

The Monument

The monument consisted of four upright slabs arranged in a star pattern around a central pillar, capped by a horizontal stone. The slabs were inscribed with ten guidelines in eight modern languages.

The Guidelines

The guidelines included:

  • Maintain humanity under 500,000,000
  • Guide reproduction wisely
  • Unite humanity with a living new language
  • Balance personal rights with social duties
  • Protect nature with tempered rules

The Mystery

The patron’s identity was never revealed. “R.C. Christian” worked through a local banker who took the secret to his grave. Speculation connected the pseudonym to the Rosicrucians, Freemasons, or New World Order.

Controversy

The first guideline calling for a population under 500 million (current population: 8 billion) drew accusations of advocating genocide. The monument was vandalized multiple times.

Destruction

On July 6, 2022, an explosive device destroyed one slab. Authorities demolished the remaining structure for safety reasons. The bomber was never identified.

Assessment

The Georgia Guidestones represented either a sincere attempt to provide post-apocalyptic guidance or a provocative monument by an unknown group. Their destruction added another layer of mystery to their already enigmatic history.
