Oundle School, founded in 1556 by William Laxton, Lord Mayor of London, stands in the historic market town of Oundle in Northamptonshire. The school’s ancient buildings, some dating back to medieval times, have accumulated centuries of ghostly legends, the most persistent being that of the Phantom Drummer. According to tradition, the rhythmic beating of an invisible drum is heard echoing through the school’s corridors, particularly in the older boarding houses, and is considered an omen of impending tragedy or death within the school community.

The legend of the Phantom Drummer is said to have originated in the 17th century when a young drummer boy, serving with Royalist forces during the English Civil War, was killed in or near the school grounds. His restless spirit is believed to return to beat out his ghostly tattoo, warning the living of danger ahead. Multiple witnesses over the centuries have reported hearing the distinct sound of military drumming late at night, with no physical source ever discovered. The drumming is often accompanied by the sound of marching footsteps and the clinking of military equipment, as if an invisible regiment is passing through the ancient stone corridors.

Beyond the Phantom Drummer, Oundle School reports numerous other paranormal phenomena. The school chapel has been the site of sightings of a Grey Lady, believed to be a former matron or housekeeper who died in service to the school in the Victorian era. Students in several of the older boarding houses report unexplained cold spots, doors that open and close on their own, and the sensation of being watched by unseen eyes. The school’s extensive underground tunnel system, used historically to connect various buildings, is considered particularly haunted, with maintenance staff reporting shadowy figures, disembodied voices, and overwhelming feelings of dread when working alone in the passages after dark.
