The Borley Poltergeist

Borley Rectory, dubbed “the most haunted house in England,” exhibited intense poltergeist activity alongside its famous apparitions. The poltergeist phenomena occurred throughout the building’s history and were documented by investigator Harry Price.

The Activity

Stones were thrown. Bottles moved on their own. Keys disappeared and reappeared. Messages were written on walls. The activity was persistent and varied, affecting multiple families who lived in the rectory.

The Marianne Period

When Reverend Lionel Foyster and his wife Marianne moved in, the poltergeist activity intensified. Messages appeared on walls addressing Marianne specifically. Objects were thrown at her. Some suspected she was responsible; others believed the entity had fixated on her.

Price’s Investigation

Harry Price documented the poltergeist activity extensively. He and his team witnessed objects moving, heard knocking, and saw written messages appear. His methods were later criticized, but independent witnesses confirmed activity.

The Fire

A séance predicted the rectory would burn. On February 27, 1939, it did. The fire’s origin was suspicious. Even after the ruins were demolished, activity reportedly continued at the site.

Assessment

Borley’s poltergeist phenomena remain controversial. Some events were likely genuine; others may have been fabricated or exaggerated. The truth lies somewhere in the murky middle.
