The Kilkenny Poltergeist
An Irish market town was plagued by supernatural disturbances.
The Kilkenny Poltergeist
In 1910, a house in the medieval city of Kilkenny became the scene of poltergeist activity that attracted church attention and press coverage. The case was investigated by local clergy who could not explain what they witnessed.
The Location
Kilkenny, with its Norman castle and medieval streets, has long been considered one of Ireland’s most atmospheric cities. The affected house was in the older part of the town, in a dwelling that dated back several centuries.
The Activity
Disturbances began with stone-throwing. Stones materialized in the house and were thrown at inhabitants. Soon other phenomena began: furniture moved, crockery smashed, and unexplained sounds filled the house.
The Religious Response
Catholic priests were called to bless the house. The activity temporarily decreased but then resumed with greater intensity. The failure of religious intervention troubled the clergy involved.
The Focus
A young servant girl appeared to be connected to the phenomena. She was present for most incidents and the activity seemed to center on her. She was terrified and denied any involvement.
The Resolution
When the servant was sent away from the house, the activity ceased. She found employment in a different part of Ireland and experienced no further phenomena. The house returned to normal.
Assessment
The Kilkenny poltergeist case displays the classic pattern of adolescent-focused poltergeist activity. The failure of religious blessing to permanently end the disturbances was notable in Catholic Ireland.
