The Stans Poltergeist
A young servant girl was the focus of phenomena that Swiss officials could not explain.
The Stans Poltergeist
Between 1860 and 1862, the small Swiss town of Stans experienced poltergeist phenomena centered on Joséphine, a young servant girl. The case was thoroughly investigated by local officials who documented events they could not explain.
The Phenomena
Objects moved on their own throughout the household. Furniture slid across floors. Stones fell inside sealed rooms. Joséphine’s possessions were thrown about. The activity followed her from house to house as she changed employment.
The Investigation
Swiss officials took the case seriously. A formal investigation was conducted, including keeping Joséphine under constant observation. Despite scrutiny, the phenomena continued to occur when she could not have caused them.
The Medical Examination
Doctors examined Joséphine for signs of epilepsy, hysteria, or fraud. They found nothing abnormal. She appeared to be a normal young woman who was herself terrified by what was happening.
The Resolution
The activity gradually diminished as Joséphine reached her late teens. She married and lived a normal life. The phenomena did not return.
Assessment
The Stans case was notable for its official investigation and the respectability of the witnesses. Swiss officials approached it as a matter requiring investigation rather than dismissal. Their documented puzzlement adds credibility to the case.
