The Uckfield Poltergeist
A Wealden market town was disturbed by unexplained phenomena.
The Uckfield Poltergeist
In 1935, a house in the market town of Uckfield, East Sussex, experienced several months of poltergeist activity. The case attracted local attention and was investigated by interested researchers.
The Town
Uckfield is a market town in the Sussex Weald, north of Lewes. In 1935, it was a quiet community of shops and residences. The affected house was a typical family home in the town center.
The Activity
The disturbances began with small objects moving overnight. Keys went missing. Ornaments relocated. Soon more dramatic phenomena began: furniture moved on its own, doors opened and closed, and objects flew through the air.
The Focus
A young woman in the household, in her late teens, appeared to be connected to the activity. Phenomena were most frequent and intense in her presence. She was frightened and had no explanation for what was happening.
The Investigation
Researchers from the Society for Psychical Research investigated the case. They witnessed some phenomena but could not determine their cause. The possibility of fraud was considered but not proven.
The Resolution
The activity ceased after the young woman moved away to take a position as a domestic servant. She experienced no further phenomena. The house returned to normal.
Assessment
The Uckfield poltergeist case fits the pattern of adolescent-focused poltergeist activity. The phenomenon’s connection to a young person and its cessation upon her departure are typical of such cases.
